Setting goals

This is an important first step in planning your retirement and one that a financial adviser can help you with. Goals can be short, medium or long term.

Examples of short-term goals (general time frame:  6 - 18 months)

  • Go on a holiday
  • Buy a new TV
  • Redecorate the house

Examples of medium-term goals (general time frame: 18 months to 5 years)

  • Move house
  • Buy a new car
  • Pursue a hobby

Examples of longer-term goals (time frame: over 5 years)

  • Ensure you can afford high quality medical care later in life
  • Ensure your loved ones are provided for

By having some idea of what you want to do, you can attempt to ensure that your finances can help you meet these goals.
